As a Project/Construction Manager for Atwell, one of my responsibilities is to procure bids and manage the construction for Sun Communities, which has numerous manufactured housing developments throughout the United States.

In the past few years, we’ve worked with Sommerset Paving on multiple projects. I know I can always trust Matt and Sue to send proposals very quickly, and that their price will be competitive and fair. I also know they’ll make the job happen as soon as we need it, and it’ll be done with as little impact on residents as possible.

The Hamburg Garage is a 100-year-old repair facility that has changed hands a few times over the years but has always remained (and still is) a small family-owned business. The parking lot at the shop had deteriorated so severely that it was becoming a safety concern, not to mention an eyesore.

In June 2019, Sommerset Paving removed and replaced multiple driveways in this subdivision. In June 2020, the driveways were seal coated, which is always recommended as good preventive maintenance the following season and then every 2–3 years after that.

There were several factors that sold me on Sommerset Paving and influenced my opinion of the process. 

I must give kudos to Victor for two things. He was an excellent communicator always replying promptly to questions. And, importantly, he was a good listener – a lost art today. He isn’t easily ruffled and has vast quantities of patience. This was especially helpful as I was coordinating with him to replace the driveways for myself and multiple other neighbors.

As we moved to implement, I was impressed with Keith, who managed the paving crew – and even more impressed with his team! Two things stood out there. First, there was a clear sense of teamwork and humor; they  clearly enjoyed working together. Everyone pitched in and there were no slackers. Second, it was nice to see Victor actively working with the team and unafraid of getting his hands dirty. I guess he is more than just a pretty face!

I was also highly impressed with the gentleman who did the grading. He was an artist! It was almost like he could sense what needed to be done and how the grade could be improved. After grading the driveway, he detected a spongy spot due to all the clay in the soil, which he ultimately dug out and filled back in with aggregate. This will save us money over the long term.

Finally, there’s Sue, who does all the scheduling and rescheduling as required by any number of factors including weather and customer needs.  Again, great communication and a sense of humor. I have a new appreciation for how hard it is to coordinate this work.
