OUR COMPANY

Serving our Community, Our Clients, and our Employees

Sommerset Paving was created out of the frustration of the lack of customer service, timeliness, and communication in the asphalt paving industry.  Sommerset strives to be the “Anti-Contractor Contractor.”  At Sommerset we answer the phone, we respond to website inquiries, we make appointments to meet clients in person, and most importantly our crews care about the projects they are working on.

What sets Sommerset Paving A P A R T  from other local asphalt installation companies?  Our employees nicknamed Sommerset Paving “Happy’s Paving: The happiest construction company on the planet!”  We as a company think that is awesome.  We enjoy our team mates at work and at various family events.  A happy company increases the safety of not only our employees but the citizens that might be driving or walking near a work site.

At Sommerset’s inception, we were a seal coat and crack fill provider.  We have steadily grown to a full service asphalt and concrete installation company.  Sommerset gained Woman Owned Business status (WBE, WOSB)  in 2012.  In 2017 Sommerset applied and was granted Disadvantaged Business Enterprise(DBE) and SBE (Small Business Enterprise) from Wayne County Airport Authority.  These designations have allowed Sommerset to grow into the markets of Department of Transportation paving, Federal Government contracts, and work in the utility industry.

So if you see marking paint someplace drawn in the shape of a 😊  …. you will know it is Sommerset Paving.

Our Services

We are Capable of Handling a Wide Range of Projects

We handle a wide variety of projects, but most of our work includes a combination of the following:

New Construction/Installation
33%
tear out/repave
27%
maintenance/sealing
37%
drainage/site evaluation
23%

Settling and sinking is often an indication that the sub base has failed due to water infiltration or improper drainage and lack of aggregate compaction.  Filling a sunken area from the top is a temporary band aid as it is the earth below the asphalt that is sinking.  Settling and sinking often need to be addressed by removing the areas of asphalt and fixing the area below the surface. Clay for instance, should be removed and replaced with layers of compacted aggregate. Drain tile might also be necessary depending on the ground conditions around the paved surface.

Asphalt driveways are seal coated every 2-3 years.  Sealing a driveway helps the asphalt to not oxidize and dry out due to sun, wind, rain, and snow. Very little traffic utilizes a driveway, therefore, the asphalt oils are not kneaded back into the pavement like they are on a highway. When asphalt dries out it becomes prone to pot holes and additional cracking. All asphalt does crack, therefore, crack fill is an essential part of routine maintenance. When water gets into cracks, especially in northern climates, they expand and contract which causes the cracks to widen.  Cracks up to 1” wide can be crack filled. Beyond 1” cracked areas would need to be removed and replaced with fresh asphalt and compacted with an appropriate sized roller.

Sommerset Paving employs project estimators with many years of experience. Traffic patterns,  the size of trucks, and planned usage of a project determines the recommended asphalt mix design of a project. Asphalt mix designs are complex scientific formulas and there are many to choose from. Sommerset provides options to both residential and commercial customers for the appropriate material for each project.  Budget and estimated ownership of a project are also taken into consideration.

An asphalt driveway typically has a 20-25 year life span with proper maintenance. A driveway should be seal coated and crack filled every 2-3 years.  Additionally, adding another layer of hot mix asphalt around year 15 helps to stretch the life of pavement to the 25 year mark.

Driveways fail due to water sitting on the asphalt which causes the pavement to dry out and crack, the sub base might never have been installed properly, the asphalt mix might not have been appropriate for the location, lack of routine maintenance, and the natural ending of the pavement life cycle around year 20-25.

For commercial, industrial, and MDOT projects Sommerset Paving covers the entire area of SouthEastern Michigan.  Wayne County, Oakland County, Livingston County, Washtenaw County, Macomb County, Jackson County, Kalamazoo County, are a few of the commercial, industrial and MDOT areas that Sommerset completes projects. Sommerset Paving serves residential customers in Ann Arbor, Saline, Ypsilanti, Dexter, Chelsea, Whitmore Lake, Brighton, Milford, Northville, Novi, South Lyon, and Plymouth.
